PERIODONTOLOGY
Periodontology is the field of Dentistry that deals with the diseases of the periodontal tissues, i.e. the tissues that surround the tooth. These tissues are the gums (gingiva) and the bone (alveolar tissue). Their health is essential for good functionality.
Gingivitis and periodontitis are the main inflammatory diseases of the periodontal tissues. Gingivitis is characterised by red, swollen and bleeding gums while periodontitis additionally by bone loss.
Gingivitis is completely reversible with the proper treatment (scaling), commonly known as teeth cleaning. If left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis.
Periodontitis is characterised by resorption of the supporting bone. It varies in severity and needs immediate treatment. The aim is to prevent further bone loss and to preserve the teeth.
Our main concern is the appropriate education and guidance of patients to maintain good oral hygiene in order to avoid the above-mentioned diseases.
